Red Barrel Vineyard is a Hawkes Bay micro boutique winery and small function venue. It is located 2.5km from the centre of Havelock North and is the first winery encountered on entering the renowned Te Mata special character zone which has become synonymous with outstanding Hawkes Bay wines.
The location of Red Barrel lends itself to ultimately becoming a ‘destination’ offering wine sales and facilities for group wine tastings, small functions, private dinners, meetings and weddings. Red Barrel wines are available by contacting us directly and through our mailing list and selected restaurants.
Piku Izakaya Japanese is offering dining from Thursday’s to Sunday’s until May 2019. In addition to the dining experience they offer, Piku are operating the cellar door, as well as restaurant function facilities which can be booked directly through Piku. Visit our dining page for more info!
The vineyard was established in 1997, predominantly planted in Syrah and Merlot. Chardonnay was introduced in 2010 and is expected to take its place amongst the ranks of other elite Chardonnay’s from the area.
The magnificent form of Te Mata Peak provides a dramatic back-drop and the slight South to North downward slope of the 2.62 hectare vineyard maximises the benefits of the sun. The soil is mostly made up of 30cm to 40cm of sandy loam on top of a silica pan. The pan limits root activity, helping to concentrate the fruit on the vines.
Red Barrel’s philosophy is simple … the wine needs to fully reflect the full potential of the Te Mata Special Character Zone to be good enough to be labeled under the Red Barrel brand.
Plans Our Future
The winery plans to produce five wines. These will reflect the soils, climate and unique character of the Te Mata special character zone. At full production our goal is to produce:
150 cases of fresh vibrant unoaked Chardonnay
150 cases of complex layered Reserve Chardonnay
150 cases of crisp bright Rosé
200 cases of smooth full rounded Merlot and
300 cases of deep garnet elegant Syrah
